What Causes Chronic Pelvic Pain?

Have you been experiencing pelvic pain for more than six months? While it can be very hard to pinpoint the exact cause of your condition, here are some of the probable reasons, among many others, why you have it and its accompanying symptoms.

When the inside lining of the uterus develops abnormally, it results in a condition known as endometriosis. Its symptoms include pelvic pain and cramps. There may also be discomfort during sex, ovulation or bowel movements. During the menstrual period, there may also be rectal bleeding.

Other symptoms include lower back pain, discomfort during urination, abdominal bloating and spotting between periods.

Interstitial Cystitis

This condition is associated with an inflamed bladder and usually affects women between the ages of 30 and 40. Symptoms include frequent urges to urinate, discomfort during urination and painful intercourse.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

When bacteria have infiltrated the urinary tract, which includes the urethra, bladder and kidneys, it results in an infection. UTI generally affects women more than men. Its symptoms include frequent urges to urinate, a burning sensation during urination, the presence of blood in urine, producing cloudy urine and lower back pain.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Pelvic pain is sometimes caused by intestinal disorders, not just the reproductive organs; among them is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Symptoms of IBS include constipation or diarrhea, bloating and flatulence.

Uterine Fibroids

When noncancerous tumors grow on the walls of the uterus, it can lead to a painful condition known as uterine fibroids. Other symptoms include heavy menstrual periods, frequent urges to urinate, hemorrhoids, constipation and menstrual cramps.
